Choose touch technology by the interaction the product must support, then validate the sensor, controller and application together. A touchscreen is more than a transparent layer: cover construction, coordinate mapping, firmware and the host input path all affect the result. This collection helps turn a broad requirement for touch into an integration plan. Begin with the user tasks and mechanical envelope, identify which inputs must be recognized, and use representative software to verify accuracy, gestures and recovery before approving the production configuration.
01 Choose the sensing method and construction
02 Integrate coordinates, firmware and host input
List the required input methods, contact area, gestures and surface conditions before comparing resistive and projected-capacitive approaches. Review the sensor outline, active area, cover construction and routing constraints with the supplier. A familiar technology name does not define the complete touch stack or guarantee that a proposed cover will work. Request drawings and controller requirements for the exact assembly, and compare the options using the same user tasks. Retain the reasoning so later cosmetic or enclosure changes trigger the appropriate engineering review.
Verify the full path from a physical contact to the application's response. Check axis direction, rotation, scaling and edge accuracy with the intended display resolution and mounting orientation. For unusual aspect ratios or narrow sensors, include targets near the edges and corners rather than testing only the centre. Record controller firmware and configuration alongside the host driver version. If calibration is required, define when it is performed and how the product confirms it remains valid after assembly, replacement or a software update.
Run representative tasks in the application, including repeated actions, simultaneous contacts where required and recovery after power or software interruptions. Check that the interface communicates the recognized action clearly and handles incomplete input predictably. Review customization and supplier support early enough to resolve sensor, firmware and host responsibilities before production. Keep an approved touch configuration with the product release records, and agree how controller or sensor changes will be communicated. This makes field feedback actionable and avoids treating every application interaction problem as a sensor replacement issue.

Capture the requirements and the evidence you will use to compare candidate solutions.
| Requirement | What to define |
|---|---|
| Interaction brief | Define intended users, contacts, gestures, target sizes and surface construction. |
| Stack definition | Record sensor, cover, adhesive arrangement, controller and routing constraints. |
| Input baseline | Keep coordinate mapping, firmware, controller settings, host driver and application versions. |
| Task verification | Test representative workflows, edge targets, required multi-touch and recovery behaviour. |
Choose against the required input methods, surface stack and operating conditions. Compare exact implementations using representative tasks rather than assuming one technology fits every product.
Confirm axis mapping, scaling, edge accuracy and application target placement on the assembled product. Keep the configuration with the controller and software revision records.
Agree responsibilities for the sensor, controller firmware, host driver and application. A shared symptom record helps the relevant teams isolate the cause efficiently.
