Custom Displays and Sourcing Guides

Turn the product concept into a brief that a supplier can quote and a team can verify. The starting point is the operator, installation and host system, followed by the exact layers that need custom work. Use the guides below to compare a standard module with a semi-custom or full-custom route, establish the mechanical and electrical baseline, and decide what each sample build must prove before tooling and production commitments expand.

INSIDE THIS GUIDE33 selected articles4 engineering decisionsRequirements first. Then compare the candidate configuration and evaluation evidence.
Decision 01

Define the module and the custom boundary

A useful specification describes the complete assembly rather than only its diagonal and resolution. Record the visible area, viewing task, lighting, mounting envelope, host output, cleaning conditions and expected operating pattern. Separate essential requirements from preferences, and identify where a standard panel or backlight could remain unchanged. This allows the supplier to propose an alternative without silently removing a critical feature. The articles in this section explain custom module options and the information needed for a comparable RFQ. Finish with a revision-controlled brief and an explicit list of exclusions.

Decision 02

Resolve the physical and application integration

Customisation reaches beyond the front appearance. A bezel, curved bracket, mounting feature or cockpit layout can alter the cable route, heat path and assembly sequence. Review the actual installation with mechanical, electrical and user-interface owners together, using a drawing that shows the stack order and the space around the module. Application examples are useful prompts for this review, but their requirements should not be copied into another product without checking the use conditions. Agree the assembly datum, tolerances and service access before treating an attractive concept image as a buildable design.

Decision 03

Give each prototype stage a clear question

Order samples to close specific uncertainties. An evaluation unit can establish fit and host compatibility; a later build may need production-intent glass, adhesive, cable and backlight to support environmental assessment. Record the parts and process used in every build, because results from a hand-built prototype do not automatically describe the intended production assembly. Simulation and application-engineering support can help identify risks, but the release decision still needs measured evidence. Define the acceptance owner, open issues and next-stage exit criteria before the sample is ordered, rather than after it arrives.

Decision 04

Translate design options into a controlled architecture

A custom display contains several interacting layers, each with different manufacturing constraints. Review the panel construction, optical path, electrical connections and protective assembly before deciding which layer should solve a problem. A request for a unique size, for example, may be satisfied by cover artwork or enclosure design rather than by changing the active panel. Use component explanations and application discussions to prepare questions for the supplier. The outcome should be a documented architecture with known dependencies, not a collection of independently selected features that have never been evaluated together.

From reading to action

Prepare a useful evaluation brief.

Capture the requirements and the evidence you will use to compare candidate solutions.

RequirementWhat to define
Custom boundaryList standard and changed layers, with the reason for each change.
Evaluation drawingShow outline, visible area, mounting, stack order and connector route.
Sample planDefine the question, materials and exit criteria for each build.
Acceptance ownershipName who approves functional, optical, mechanical and environmental results.
Common questions

Before the next design decision.

When should tooling be released?

After the relevant geometry and acceptance criteria are agreed. Record unresolved decisions before approving tooling that depends on them.

Can simulation replace prototypes?

Simulation can guide design choices, but physical samples are still needed to verify the assembled module and the assumptions used in the model.

What should a sample request include?

The drawing revision, material intent, host configuration, tests to perform and the evidence required to approve the next stage.
